The original gimlet was much sweeter than the version we drink today. It was comprised of one part gin and one part Rose’s sweetened lime juice. Some say that the drink got its name from the hand tool used for drilling small holes, as that was what one who partook of too many of these would feel was being done to his head. Others contend that Sir Thomas Gimlette of the British Royal Navy mixed gin with sweetened lime juice as a way to encourage sailors to consume citrus in order to avoid scurvy. Today gimlets are made with gin, fresh lime juice and simple syrup. The most tasty method is to make your own simple syrup to keep on hand for use in this and many other cocktails.
