Classic Martini

Before prohibition in the United States, a classic martini was two parts gin and one part dry vermouth. But during prohibition the country lost its taste for vermouth and as the 20th century progressed, martinis were made with an ever smaller ratio of vermouth until the drink was almost entirely gin, with just a hint of vermouth and perhaps a dash of orange bitters. There are endless variations on the martini, with perhaps the most famous being the vodka martini favored by James Bond, that is “shaken, not stirred.” Legend has it that Bond preferred his martinis shaken to make them more diluted so that he could have a drink without losing his edge.
